Vein of Gold is an underdeveloped rural subdivision in the Sun Valley area of Navajo County, approximately seven miles east of Holbrook.  It lies near Interstate 40 and Historic Route 66 in the wide-open high desert of northeastern Arizona.

Enjoy the Open Country of Northern Arizona

Vein of Gold is located in Arizona’s high-desert country, an area of broad horizons, open grassland and colorful desert scenery. The landscape includes grasslands, shrublands, mesas, washes and badland formations.

This is a sparsely populated environment rather than a conventional developed subdivision. Buyers who value open space, privacy, desert scenery and room to explore may find the area especially attractive. The region also offers clear views of the sky and limited urban lighting, making sunsets and nighttime stargazing part of the experience.

Historic Route 66 Country

Historic Route 66 passes through Sun Valley and Holbrook. Although Interstate 40 now carries most through traffic, the old highway remains an important part of the region’s identity.

Holbrook preserves much of the character associated with the Mother Road, including vintage roadside architecture, historic businesses, neon signs, and the well-known Wigwam Motel with its concrete teepee rooms. Petrified Forest National Park and the Painted Desert

Petrified Forest National Park is one of the region’s outstanding attractions. The park contains one of the world’s best-known concentrations of colorful petrified wood, but there is far more to see including Blue Mesa, Newspaper Rock and Puerco Pueblo, Agate Bridge, Rainbow Forest Museum, Giant Logs and Crystal Forest.  You can also enjoy Scenic driving, hiking, bicycling, photography and ranger programs.  Visitors can explore Painted Desert overlooks, fossil exhibits, ancient petroglyphs, archaeological sites, historic buildings and remnants of the original Route 66 alignment.

Holbrook: Shopping, Services and Old West History

Holbrook is the Navajo County seat and the principal community serving the Sun Valley area. It provides shopping, fuel, restaurants, lodging, government offices and other everyday services.

The city has a colorful history involving railroads, cattle ranching, lawmen, outlaws and travelers along Route 66. Visitors can explore the historic downtown area and the Navajo County Historic Courthouse and Museum. Other attractions include the Wigwam Motel, Hidden Cove Golf Course, city parks and O’Dell Hidden Cove Park, which is known for desert scenery, birdlife and ancient petroglyphs.

Joseph City and the Little Colorado River Valley

Joseph City lies west of Holbrook along Interstate 40 and Historic Route 66. It is a small rural community with deep roots in the settlement, ranching, farming and railroad history of the Little Colorado River Valley. The Joseph City and Holbrook area provides a look at a quieter side of northern Arizona: open range, small communities, historic transportation routes and the broad valley of the Little Colorado River.

Regional Recreation and Day Trips

Homolovi State Park - - Near Winslow, Homolovi protects ancestral Hopi archaeological sites and offers walking, camping, wildlife viewing and opportunities to learn about the history of the region.

Winslow and Standin’ on the Corner - - Winslow is another celebrated Route 66 town. Its historic downtown, railroad heritage and Standin’ on the Corner Park make it a popular stop.

Meteor Crater - - West of Winslow, Meteor Crater allows visitors to view one of the world’s best-preserved meteorite-impact sites.Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests and the White Mountains.  The higher country to the south offers pine forests, lakes, camping, hiking, fishing and cooler summer recreation. Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside and Springerville provide access to the White Mountains.

Lyman Lake State Park - - Southeast of Holbrook, Lyman Lake offers boating, fishing, camping, hiking and petroglyph trails when conditions and park rules permit.

Canyon de Chelly - - Canyon de Chelly National Monument, within the Navajo Nation, is a longer day trip featuring dramatic canyon scenery and a living cultural landscape. Visitors should observe all Navajo Nation requirements and access restrictions.

Utilities

Most Vein of Gold properties should be approached as undeveloped or off-grid land unless an individual listing expressly states otherwise.

Public water is not expected to be available.  You will probably haul water in or have it hauled.  You can consult a qualified Arizona well driller regarding the feasibility and cost of drilling a well. 

Electrical lines run through part of the subdivision.  For any questions regarding availability, price, etc., call the Navopache Electric Cooperative at 800-543-6324. Some lots will have electricity available, but for most properties buyers will probably want to investigate solar power.  Wastewater disposal would normally require an approved septic or other lawful system. Any residential, recreational or other development should be discussed with Navajo County and other appropriate agencies before purchase.

Roads and Access

Vein of Gold was platted with roads and access corridors.  No property is landlocked.  Conditions on the ground vary substantially.  Some routes may be readily visible and regularly traveled. Others may be rough, faint, overgrown, washed out or never fully constructed.  Every property has legal access though, none are landlocked.

Zoning and Intended Use

Vein of Gold is within Navajo County’s A-General zoning district.  Setbacks from the property corners are 20 feet from the front; 20 feet from the rear; and 10 feet from the side.  You should direct any land usage, zoning, and building requirements questions to Navajo County Planning and Development Services at 928-532-6040 or you can submit a question through their website.

Building, manufactured-home placement, recreational-vehicle use, septic systems, grading, commercial activity and animal uses may each be subject to separate rules, permits or limitations.  For smaller properties you will need to ensure with Planning and Development that your plan for septic is acceptable.

The Vein of Gold Units

Unit 5 - - is located along the south side of Interstate Highway 40 / Route 66.  It includes a number of larger individual lots than are found in some of the more compact portions of Vein of Gold.  Electricity runs along most of the west side of Unit 5, and another power line is about 270 yards east of the east side of the unit. 

Unit 7 - - is located along the south side of the highway, just east of Unit 5.  Electric power runs along the north side of the highway.  As far as we know nobody is living yet in Unit 7.  This is your chance to be near the highway yet not have neighbors.

Unit 8 - - runs along the north side of the highway.  There is electric power along the south side of the unit.  Pima Street runs through the southern part of the subdivision, giving easier access than most of the other units.

Unit 9 - - runs along the north side of the highway, on the west side of Unit 8.  It offers additional choices within the broader Sun Valley setting.  Power runs along the southern side of the unit, as well as through the middle of the unit.  Pima Street, Pinto Street, and Quartzite Street run through Unit 9.  This unit has more power availability and easier existing access than the other units.

Unit 11 - - is a large area.  It is north of Unit 8, farther away from the highway.  Coyote Road runs along its east side.  To the best of our knowledge there currently is either one residence or no residences in Unit 11.  This could be your great spot to get away from people and yet not be remote. 

Unit 12 - - is on the south side of Unit 5, farther from the highway.  Power runs along the west and south sides of the unit.  Rocket Road runs along the north side of the unit; Rapture Road runs along the south side; S 24th St runs along the west side; and S 32nd St runs along its east side.
