El Dorado Estates in New Mexico

El Dorado Estates

Beautiful Sunny Weather

Scenic Off-Grid Living With Gorgeous Mountain Views

½ Acre Lots Sold In Buildable Groups Of 2 Or More

These residential lots are in Unit 4 of El Dorado Estates, about 16 miles south of Deming, which is the geographic center and the seat of Luna County, New Mexico. The majority of the county is fairly flat, either grasslands or desert scrub, and contains three mountain ranges.

Every lot is 0.5 acres, 162 feet by 135 feet.  You can buy these residential lots to hold for investment, or for building, or to have a place to RV.  There are no time restrictions on when or if to build and there are no unreasonable restrictions on what to build.  Water would be by storage unless you contact a local well driller to see if a specific property is suitable for a water well.  A septic system would be required when you build.  With approximately 355 days of sunshine per year, this is one of the best areas in the United States for solar power as shown by the expanding solar generation facilities in Alta Luna and Deming.  There is power along County Road 24 a half mile to the south, but not to these properties yet.  Solar power is the smart choice in this sunny area.  New Mexico generally requires at least 3/4 of an acre to issue a building permit for a permanent home that is not serviced by a city water and sewage system.  We are selling these lots in pairs, which means that your property will be at least 1 full acre and will exceed the acreage requirement for residential building.  Unit 4 is bound on the north by County Road 25 (Penn St) and on the west by San Acacia Street.  County Road 24 is ½ mile to the south.

Taxes are under $5 per year per lot and are current.  Cell phones work everywhere.  Title is free and clear.  Every lot in this Subdivision was surveyed and pinned when it was laid out

El Dorado Estates has gorgeous views of the Florida Mountains which are only about 8 miles east and are over 7000 feet high.  This is the only place in the United States where the Persian Ibex, also known as "The Prince Of Persia", lives wild.  At the north end of the range is Rock Hound Park, where you can camp, explore the rocky hills, and collect agate, jasper, quartz, and geodes.   The Florida Mountains are also home to Mahoney Park.  The Tres Hermanas Mountains are about 9 miles to the south of El Dorado Estates and are over 5000 feet high.

You can drive about 16 miles south of El Dorado Estates to Columbus, where you can camp at Pancho Villa State Park, visit the local museum and explore the village. Just south of Columbus, you can cross the international border into Palomas and enjoy enchiladas and shopping, or you can drive farther south into the Chihuahuan Desert, North America's largest desert, and explore the stunning prehistoric Puebloan ruins at Casas Grandes-Paquime and if you are an art lover admire their famous pottery

To the northeast you will find the beautiful White Sands National Monument, Spaceport America, and the Rio Grande River where you can enjoy water sports such as whitewater rafting and skiing.  65 miles northeast of Deming you’ll find the Caballo Dam-Elephant Butte Lake Reservoir which is the second largest manmade lake in the United States and offers three marinas, water sports, boating, camping, and picnicking along with some of the best fishing in the state. You can take tours from Deming to the mountains to the north to visit historic mining areas which were once raided by the Apaches; the Gila National Forest, where you can hike and camp in true wilderness settings and where the hunter can find bear, mountain lion and mule deer; and City of Rocks, where you can camp and picnic and climb strange and spectacular rock formations.

El Dorado Estates sit in the Mimbres River Water Basin which is responsible for the rich fertile fields surrounding Deming. There is great soil for gardening and access to water if you decide to drill a well. The growing season is long and with the fertile soil, can be plentiful. The weather is spectacular with approximately 355 days of sunshine a year. The air is pure and dry and the night sky is so clear and full of stars you’ll feel like you could reach out and touch them. Summer days get to the 90’s and summer nights are in the 60’s. Winters are short and mild with temperatures in the 60’s.

Located at 4,331 feet above sea level with a population of about 14,000 is the neatly laid-out city of Deming which lies among irrigated fields and desert grasslands, all set against the backdrop of the Florida Mountains which tower over 7,000 feet offering breathtaking views. It attracts many winter visitors, who are drawn by the moderate seasonal climate, laid-back atmosphere and favorable location. The agricultural community raises chili, onions, cotton, pecans, wine grapes, feed crops and cattle. The water and the agricultural influences truly make Deming an oasis in the desert.

Deming is conveniently located with easy access to four major highways: U.S. 80, U.S. 70, Interstate 10 and State Highway 11 and is approximately halfway between the two major cities of Tucson and El Paso. Las Cruces is the closest big city at 59 miles away and is home to New Mexico State University. Deming has its own Deming Municipal Airport, with Grant County Airport 32 miles Northwest and Las Cruces International Airport 40 miles east. Amtrak also offers transportation services to the city of Deming through the Sunset Limited Route which runs from California to Florida.

In the early days, Deming was called "the city of windmills," reflecting the community’s use of wind energy to pump water from large aquifers created by the nearby mountain streams. The arrival of the railroad in 1881 was a defining event for the community. A Harvey House was built to serve train passengers, and it became a social center for Deming. Part of the original building is still standing next to the Amtrak train depot.

Deming’s downtown business area still has various brick buildings which exhibit the architecture of the late 19th century. For a small town, Deming offers visitors and residents a lot of options. You can visit the Deming Luna Mimbres Museum at the old Armory to see exhibits of the famed Mimbres Pottery and other artifacts. You can play a round of golf at the Rio Mimbres Country Club 18-hole golf course, hunt domestic and exotic game in season, be a spectator at a nearby Rodeo or enjoy wine-tasting at the St. Clair Winery. You could also take a break from the heat and go for a swim at the Sam Baca Aquatic Center, a first-class swimming facility which offers a therapy pool, 25-yard competition pool and an activity pool with 150 foot water slide. You won’t want to miss Deming’s annual Great American Duck Race, a long-standing event, on the last week-end of every August where duck-owners are encouraged to participate in the main event. If you don’t own a fast, thoroughbred duck, you can participate in highly competitive tortilla tosses and outhouse races.

The people of Deming take pride in their city and have a City Of Deming Downtown Master Plan (PDF link) and Deming Main Street Project with plans in the works for several community improvements such as a downtown bike route system, enhancements to streets, sidewalks and park areas, a farmers market plaza, art programs, and residential enhancements to name a few. Deming with its warm sunny climate, affordable land and property, many natural, cultural and historical attractions in the area, location near several transportation routes, low tax rates, an active 9-5 business environment and new businesses from the Mexican border helps draw new residents and tourists alike to this growing oasis in the desert.
